It is less dependent on the output power. A 5-watt radio gives you a better range than a 2-watt radio, but not much. The actual range of any UHF or FM radio is not much more than a few blocks in an urban environment. You COULD get up to a mile in a rural area with no hills and few buildings or vegetation between them. It`s also completely illegal in Canada, but if you use it on GMRS Ch 1-7 or 15-22 at low power (1W), I don`t think anyone would come after you.
