Areas of study include forest ecology, forest soils, silviculture, tree improvement, forest biology, economics, forest inventory, geographic information systems, growth and yield, wood science and forest biology. The university works with the Peace Corps to integrate Peace Corps service into its curriculum and has a 4,600-acre research forest and center that supports student and faculty research. The course can be completed in three semesters. Michigan Tech students can earn the additional MF degree in an additional year through the accelerated master`s program. Applicants must have at least a bachelor`s degree from a regionally accredited institution, preferably in a natural science such as biology, chemistry or ecology. You must have achieved a minimum GPA and submit GRE or GMAT results. Some doctoral programs only accept students who have completed a master`s degree and a thesis. Forest science students prepare for a variety of career opportunities. You can work as a forester, arborist, ranger, conservation scientist, environmental educator, geoinformatics, researcher and more. You will also complete higher education in forestry, ecology, raw materials policy or environmental law. Graduates of the program work for many organizations, including the U.S. Forest Service, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Society of American Foresters, the Aldo Leopold Foundation, environmental consultants, and private companies.
There are two specializations in the program: Professional Forestry and Natural Sciences. The SAF-accredited Professional Forestry specialization is designed to help graduates qualify for registration as a professional forester in California. Forestry is the art and science of forest management and conservation. Our interdisciplinary forestry program focuses on sustainable forest management for productivity, health and biodiversity. Forestry graduates contribute to addressing major environmental challenges in the areas of climate change, sustainable development, resource management and biodiversity conservation. They also work to protect and restore forest ecosystems, ensure a sustainable supply of forest products, provide wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities, and maintain soil and water resources. Columbia College in Sonora, California, sits on hundreds of acres of forest and offers an associate of science in forestry. Columbia is part of the Yosemite Community College District, which partners with the USDA Forest Service to provide training at the High Sierra Institute in historic Baker Station in Sierra Nevada. Courses include soil science, dendrology (plant identification), forest surveying, GIS and remote sensing, and forest management techniques. A course on the human dimensions of forest management, such as law, policy and conservation, is also required.
The Ministry cooperates with the geographic information systems and water resources management programmes to integrate these areas into the curriculum. Students gain solid experience in wildlife and watersheds, forestry, mapping, and other necessary skills. You`ll also gain valuable hands-on experience in Yosemite National Park, Stanislaus National Forest, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, and other nearby locations. Forestry program programs prepare graduates for employment in local, state, and federal natural resources agencies, as well as the private sector. In addition, many graduates continue their studies in advanced master`s and doctoral programs. Federal agencies employing our graduates include the Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Office of Reclamation, Office of Land Management, Environmental Protection Agency, Tennessee Valley Authority, and Army Corps of Engineers. There are also employment opportunities in the state government with agencies such as the Fish and Game Commissions, the Natural Resources and Conservation Departments, and the Forest Service. At the local level, there are opportunities with urban forest and parking systems. Private organizations included Ducks Unlimited, Nature Conservancy, the National Audubon Society, and the American Forestry Association. Forest graduates are often employed by private forestry consulting firms and in private industries such as Weyerhaeuser Co., International Paper Co., Georgia Pacific Corporation and New Page Corporation.
Graduate programs in forestry include advanced science courses in tree physiology and taxonomy, forest dynamics, ecology, soil science, hydrology, statistics, scientific research methods, and environmental law. They also focus on administrative issues such as politics, management and finance. These are usually professional degrees that require a course or capstone project rather than a thesis. Urban forestry is an emerging field that focuses on integrating forests into society through parks and trees in public spaces. The recent focus on more liveable cities has made this integration a growing trend. Trees and green spaces offer valuable benefits in urban areas, such as protection from stormwater and shade. Graduates hold management and policy positions in forestry, wildlife biology, land use management and environmental consulting. They are employed by government agencies, private companies and environmental non-profit organizations. In addition to the general university requirements, all CALS students must meet a number of college and major requirements.
